NBA news: Anthony Davis trade shock, Kevin Durant to Lakers update, Carmelo Anthony issue. The Los Angeles Lakers will not look to sign a top free agent next summer as they are more likely to try and trade for Anthony Davis, according to Bleacher Report’s Ric Bucher.
The Lakers have created enough cap space to give them the best chance of signing a top free agent such as Kevin Durant or Kawhi Leonard next summer.
However, Bucher believes Lakers president of basketball operations Magic Johnson will be more keen on trying to broker a deal with the New Orleans Pelicans to sign Davis.
“It’s a matter of the players that are available and part of the challenge is they are all guys… Paul George, Kawhi Leonard, Kevin Durant – these are all ball-handling forwards who can play either position,” Bucher said on The Dan Patrick Show.
“That’s essentially what LeBron is there’s a duplication there and not to say that duplication doesn’t work.
“But for where these guys are is it ideal? No it’s not ideal.
“So I believe that ultimately the guy that the Lakers get to fill that spot isn’t necessarily going to be a free agent.
“Maybe it’s a Khris Middleton, no offence to Khris but sort of that second-tier guy who would step in and sign as a free agent.
“But if they’re going to get the big name and Anthony Davis is the name that’s out there the most and certainly the Klutch agency that LeBron is part of also represents AD and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.”
Kevin Durant will not join the Los Angeles Lakers because he will not get any credit for any accomplishments if he was to team up with LeBron James.
That’s according to Bleacher Report’s Ric Bucher, who suggests Durant will forego the opportunity to play with James.
Durant is yet to state whether or not he intends to re-sign with the Golden State Warriors.
But if he decides to leave the reigning champions, then Bucher doesn’t foresee Durant taking his talents to Los Angeles.
“He made a point of saying that guys like Kawhi or Paul George – he could see why they wouldn’t want to be in this atmosphere,” Bucher said on The Dan Patrick Show.
“He’s been somewhat coy about what his plans are for next year, he’s not committing one way or the other, whether it’s Golden State or exploring his free agent options.
“Everything else that I know about where he’ at mentally, I don’t think that he’s heading to L.A.
“I don’t think that he’s headed to play with LeBron.”
Carmelo Anthony is facing an anxious wait to find a new NBA team and LeBron James is not showing any signs of trying to bring him to the Lakers.
That’s according to Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix, who claims there isn’t a lot of interest in Anthony right now.
“Has LeBron ever made an effort to play with Carmelo Anthony? Not really,” Mannix said on The Rich Eisen Show.
“That’s not to say that he doesn’t think that they could mix but he has never looked at him being the ideal team-mate for him.
“Carmelo, from what I’ve heard, they’re looking for a team that wants him.
“The Rockets are doing right by him by keeping him on the roster, they could waive him at any time.
“The teams that were interested in the past – Miami, not all that interested right now; Portland, not interested right now.”
